Proposed Indo-Lanka bridge may open door to smugglers: Mahanayake Thera

Colombo, Oct. 24 (Daily Mirror) - Mahanayake of the Malwatta Chapter Ven. Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera said Sri Lanka is already facing the threat of smuggling of contraband goods and narcotics by sea and that it would worsen if the proposed bridge linking Sri Lanka and India was built.

During a meeting with Air Force Commander Air Vice Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe, the Ven, Mahanayake Thera stressed the danger of the proposed project.

The Air Force Commander attended religious observances at the Sri Dalada Maligawa before he met the Mahanayake Theras of Malwatta and Asgiriya Chapters to receive their blessings on the 74th anniversary of the Air Force.

The Mahanayake Thera pointed out that bulk consignments of illegal drugs smuggled into the country have been seized and, if they trickled down to the society through whatever means, it would have resulted in a massive disaster.

He said the government should take up the issue with the leaders of the countries of origin and work out an effective mechanism to prevent the racket.

The Air Force Commander pointed out that fishing boats and trawlers are being used for the contraband trade of smuggling illegal drugs and that a Sri Lankan businessman based in Korea has been carrying on the racket. He said the ship-to-boat transfer of consignment of drugs is taking place in the deep sea.

He said small quantities of illegal drugs are smuggled by air. He pointed out that the Air Force, the Navy and the Police Anti Narcotics Bureau are carrying on continual raids.
