Probe launched after body of two year old girl exhumed and taken away

The body of a two-year-old girl buried at the Rasendrakulam cemetery in Nelunkulama in Vavuniya had been exhumed and taken away by unidentified persons.

The girl Lingarajah Deepika (02) had fallen into a water tank near her relative's house when playing in the garden and drowned on August 25. Her body had been buried in the public cemetery after the postmortem examination on August 27.

When her father visited the cemetery on Thursday evening (07) he found that the grave had been dug and the body of the girl taken away while leaving only the coffin.

Police said they had not received any information yet on the individual who had taken away the body or for what purpose he had done so.

Nelumkulama police are conducting further investigations. (Sithum Chaturanga)

@Aussie, this has been going on long long time, lot longer than 2500. Sadly the long ago weird cultural traditions here are lost on those who live overseas, and Buddhist here consider them weird. What happens is it was taken for lanka culture activity which existed before even this recent 2500 year old bhuddist activity started here. That like in other countries where Bhuddism was once dominant will go, and in 100 year time we have our original culture back. Even the Portuguese come here was because original culture people want to end the Buddhist control here, and they did pooja to make it happen.

Long ago, 3000 years plus ago Sri Lanka had young children being killed in human sacrifice. The history of that, is no different to other nations, from 20,000 years ago. The bodies of the deceased are used for cultural reasons in many ancient cultures.
