Private university students get more jobs than State university students: Susil

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said private university students have access to more job opportunities whereas State university students waste their time engaging in protests and ending up being unemployed.

He also said out of 160,000 A/L qualified students only 40,000 students can be given placements at State universities.

"The remaining students must also have a university education. If they pay money for that education, what is the problem?" he questioned.

State universities are not managed well. Their curriculum is outdated . Only University of Moratuwa has produced good output. When students feel hopeless , it is easy for the political parties to exploit them because they have a lot of free time. Their degrees are not challenging, they write down notes and answer the questions from the same text at the exam. But if you try to overhaul or change this, JVP will obstruct it because as long as the state universites are useless JVP continue to get their membership growing with these state university students.

"And cannot converse or learn English" The miracle - Knowing English provide all the necessities of life. Jobs, housing, food, etc etc. We should tell the whole world this miracle. But I wonder how countries like South Korea who cannot care less for English have developed way beyond SL after starting behind SL while English venerating SL has gone in the other direction sending people to South Korea for menial labor. Associating English with social status resulted in impeding the development of SL as for all jobs even highly technical jobs, proficiency in English has been the primary criteria, leading to selecting clueless and uninventive people whose only qualification is proficiency in English

That is because the State University students over 50% of time involved in party trade union activities. Privatise the state Universities. otherwise these striking students will rot in the University for 8 to 9 years disrupting the system. Pay and learn.

State universities were role models at one time. Those days have gone with Sinhala only. What happened to the University Rugby Teams, Cricket Teams, Debating Teams, Athletics? It was the universities that fed the National team. What happened now? " English" became a Kaduwa", Sinhala became a "Lanuwa" to win votes. I can strongly vouch that none of the O/L or A/L failures from English medium schools are unemployed so much as our graduates.

After getting my degree in UK I worked in the gulf with a Sri Lankan Peradeniya educated degree civil engineer who said that he was working for several years as an executive engineer in our homeland. The shocking thing that there was a basic lack of understanding of building, plumbing, electrical connections and an inability to critically think. I progressed to site supervisor and had to relegate him to do menial administrative jobs until his contract ended

Ban them from taking part in trade union activities and teach them English. They don't even know how to talk decently in Sinhala! Nowadays using utter filth when addressing friends has become the latest trend, among children as young as 10 years!! This happens in government schools, mainly. Teach them how to behave and talk decently at a young age, instead of teaching them to "compete" with each other. Mr Minister, you seem to have some excellent ideas to change the education system in Sri Lanka but it'll take a few generations to see the results since there will be so many many obstructions, mainly from the monks!!!! Before talking about universities, it's best to address the children's behaviour starting from primary.

This statement is not fully true. Private university student in some of the stream extremely good. Such as management, hospitality , commerce, Architectural ,data science etc. These field need good communication and leadership quality.

One should be proud of his heritage and language BUT what Banda did was to ensure that we and our children studied in our mother tongue. However, he sent his children overseas to study in other's mother tongue and then serve Sri Lanka as politicians. Paradox!
