Colombo, Jan 24 (Daily Mirror) - The All Ceylon Egg Producers' Association (ACEPA) has decided to increase the price of a locally produces egg by Rs. 3 after the increase in the standard value-added tax (VAT) rate from 15% to 18% from January 1.

With the increase in the VAT, the price of an egg imported from India had been increased by Rs. 8. As a result, the price of a locally produced egg too was increased by Rs. 3.

Accordingly, the stock price of an egg directly from the poultry farm has been increased to Rs. 48. However, after the meeting held on January 21, the price increment will be effective from that day.

Accordingly, the retail price of an egg will be Rs. 54.55, the association president said.

Consumer Authority and public of Sri Lanka : Please teach the Egg producers arithmetic. If a egg is Rs 50, 3 % will be Rs 1.50. So, who is pocketing the balance Rs 1.50 per egg. This is why there is such a big wealth divide in Sri Lanka.Rich make super profits and evade taxes and the poor take the whole burden. People who do these sins should not do any charity or go to a place of worship. They must first be honest and ethical.

The title reads "Price of locally manufactured eggs increased by Rs. 3". Eggs are not "Manufactured" but "Produced". Don't forget loads of expats read the DM online. Get your words right before putting it out.

Advise retail traders to demand for the VAT registration number from all of these egg sellers. Or if not furnished, report them to the IRD and collect a reward. We citizens will have to show consumer resistance and only win against unscrupulous politically motivated mafias.
