President urgently convenes cabinet today to discuss financial crisis

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has urgently convened a cabinet meeting today to discuss the financial crisis facing the country as well as the fuel and power issues, a senior government source told Daily Mirror last night.

At the cabinet meeting held yesterday evening, the President decided to reconvene the cabinet this evening to discuss these burning issues which had spread much anger amongst the public who have desperately urged the government for some relief.

Sri Lanka has been facing its worst-ever financial crisis in recent years with the stock market also suffering a brunt yesterday.

According to brokers, Sri Lanka’s stock index plunged 4.47 percent yesterday to its lowest since October 2020 from declining shares and economic panic possibly caused by the power cuts and fuel shortage which may have impacted investor confidence.

The government has been expecting some form of redress coming in the form of financial loans from countries such as India, Saudi Arabia and even China.

The President is to discuss these issues at the cabinet meeting today evening and find some form of solutions to move ahead.( JAMILA HUSAIN)
