President pushes fast-track law to destroy seized narcotics

Colombo, March 24 (Daily Mirror) - A meeting between Anura Kumara Dissanayake and a special committee tasked with removing legal barriers to the rapid destruction of seized narcotics was held at the Presidential Secretariat.

During the discussion, the President stressed the urgent need to expedite the destruction of confiscated drug stocks to boost public confidence in the Government’s drive to eradicate the drug menace. He underscored the importance of establishing a formal and efficient mechanism to ensure the swift disposal of such substances.

Officials noted that a draft Bill to amend the relevant laws has already been prepared, with discussions focusing on further reducing delays in the destruction process in line with the proposed legislation.

Extensive deliberations were also held on practical challenges faced by the judiciary, Police and the Department of the Government Analyst. Deputy Solicitor General Suharshi Herath Jayaweera outlined issues encountered by the Attorney General’s Department in handling related cases.

Authorities emphasised that while accelerating the destruction process, it is equally vital to ensure effective prosecution of drug traffickers and prevent seized narcotics held in judicial custody from re-entering society.

Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya briefed the meeting on the current status of legal proceedings involving seized drugs and steps taken by the Police to address existing bottlenecks.

The meeting also discussed the need to enhance facilities at the Government Analyst’s Department to support the expedited process.

It was agreed to submit the amended Bill to the Cabinet at the earliest to remove legal impediments and enable the swift destruction of seized narcotics.
