Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena informed Parliament today of the President's order to call the armed forces to maintain law and order in the country.

The President issued the order under the powers vested by Section 12 of the Public Security Ordinance (Chapter 40).

The use of the "military" or armed forces in the maintenance and enforcing of civil law has always been either a prelude to or following a declaration of "martial law". This is an extremely worrying situation as it forbodes of the state of the nation to come. The order, under the guise of the letter of the security ordinance, is a clear violation of the public's right to information and furthermore a surreptitious use of powers vested with the office of President. For shame!

For how long are we going to behave like an autocratic nation? IF President can share a plan of action with regards to the overdue elections by when he and the finance ministry anticipates the funds can be released for each election (even if 2024 its ok) the public will know that democracy is still alive. RW cannot be arrogant on these sensitive topics/ Communication and more communication is needed to get the buy in of the people. So far RW is not sharing a 25 years plan broken down to slots of 3 or 4 years neither is he sharing a growth plan where industry 4.0, chat gpt AI RPA IoT etc will be in our manufacturing plants if we are to achieve the targetted 2048 vision.

President does not trust any politician in SL including the Speaker or for that matter the PM. So he had to call the entire armed forces onto the road to protect his seat until he returns back.
