President calls on Tamil, Muslim MPs to back efforts to foster unity

Colombo, Nov. 22 (Daily Mirror) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has urged Tamil and Muslim opposition parties to support the Government’s efforts to foster inter-community understanding and build a peaceful, inclusive Sri Lanka.

Speaking at a meeting held this afternoon (22) at the Presidential Secretariat, the President stressed that every citizen must have the freedom to live with full respect for all religious and cultural identities.

He affirmed that the Government would not allow the country to be drawn into “any form of racist trap” and invited all parties to back the national initiative promoting unity and coexistence.

The meeting was convened to brief representatives of Tamil and Muslim opposition parties on the activities planned for Sri Lanka Day, scheduled for December. The event is being organised with the vision of bringing all communities together to foster mutual understanding and strengthen national harmony.

Party leaders and representatives welcomed the initiative, praising the Government’s effort to create a shared platform for all Sri Lankans. They also offered proposals to support the programme.

The representatives further pledged their unconditional support for the national “A Nation United” mission to eliminate the drug menace, and for broader Government programmes aimed at promoting national and religious harmony.

Extensive discussions were held regarding the organisational aspects of Sri Lanka Day, which is being coordinated by the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs. President Dissanayake instructed the organising committee to design the event in a way that allows people from all political, religious and cultural backgrounds to participate together—reflecting a collective commitment to unity and peace.
