Colombo, June 24 (Daily Mirror) - An appeal has been made to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV seeking humanitarian intervention regarding the detention of former State Intelligence Service (SIS) Director Major General (Retd.) Suresh Sallay, who is currently being held under the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

As part of the initiative, a letter addressed to the Apostolic Nuncio to Sri Lanka, the Vatican’s diplomatic representative in the country, was formally handed over on Tuesday morning by the relatives of Mr. Sallay.

Accordingly, they are requesting the Pope’s assistance and moral intervention in light of Sallay’s current circumstances while in detention.

Sallay, who reportedly commenced a hunger strike while being held in CID custody, was later admitted to the National Hospital in Colombo for medical treatment. He continues to receive care at the hospital.

Tuesday marks the 16th day since his admission to the National Hospital, where he remains under treatment while in state custody.
