Colombo, June 21 (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Police has issued a public advisory warning citizens, particularly women, to remain vigilant against romance scams and other forms of fraud carried out through social media and digital communication platforms.
According to the Police, there has been an increase in incidents where individuals have been deceived by people posing as romantic partners or trusted acquaintances online. Police said fraudsters often gain the confidence of victims by promising marriage or long-term relationships before manipulating them into handing over money, gold jewellery, and other valuable possessions.
Police also highlighted more serious offences linked to such scams, including cases where victims were allegedly drugged using food or beverages laced with intoxicating substances before being robbed or assaulted. In some instances, these incidents have reportedly resulted in deaths.
In response to the growing threat, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has instructed all police stations, intelligence units, civil officers, and public security committees to gather information and take proactive measures to protect vulnerable individuals.
Police have urged the public to exercise caution when interacting with people met through social media or other online platforms. They advised against sharing money, jewellery, or valuables with online acquaintances and warned against disclosing personal information such as National Identity Card numbers, bank account details, addresses, or private photographs and videos.
The public has also been advised to avoid responding to suspicious phone calls, messages, or invitations to meet strangers in person or engage in financial transactions.
Anyone who suspects they have been targeted by such scams or has information regarding similar incidents is urged to contact the nearest police station or the Bureau for the Prevention of Abuse of Children and Women. Assistance is also available through the police emergency hotlines 118, 119, 107, and 109.
