Police launch special operations to curb rising vehicle thefts in Western Province

Amid a growing number of motorcycle and three-wheeler thefts, the Sri Lanka Police have launched special operations across the Western Province, including Colombo City, to tackle the rising trend.

The move follows an uptick in reports of vehicles being stolen from roadsides and public parking areas, with 13 incidents — involving 10 motorcycles and three three-wheelers — reported within just two days (November 8 and 9).

Police Media Spokesperson ASP F.U. Wutler said that dedicated investigation teams have been assigned to track the stolen vehicles and identify organized groups believed to be behind the thefts.

He added that police are also examining possible links between recent vehicle thefts and illegal spare parts trading networks operating in the region.

Authorities urged the public to use secure parking locations, install anti-theft devices, and immediately report any suspicious behaviour or unattended vehicles to local police stations.
