Police launch probe into 57 fake social media posts

Colombo, Dec. 3 (Daily Mirror) - The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched an investigation under emergency regulations after police identified 57 social media posts containing fake news, disinformation, rumours, and unverified updates that have circulated in recent days.

Police said a special CID unit is currently reviewing the posts to determine whether they could create public fear, disrupt order, or incite tensions if widely shared.

Under the Public Security Ordinance and prevailing emergency regulations, spreading false information that could lead to unrest is a punishable offence.

Police Spokesman ASP F. U. Wootler urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified content during the ongoing disaster response operations.

He said police teams are closely monitoring online platforms in order to curb misinformation and safeguard public safety.
