Police fire tear gas at students’ protest march in Peradeniya

A tense atmosphere prevailed in Peradeniya this evening as the police used tear gas to disperse a protest staged by the General Student Union of Peradeniya University.
The protest was held to address several demands, including the withdrawal of the online safety bill, the prohibition of conferring medical degrees through private universities, the removal of the Chief Security Officer of the university and the initiation of a formal inquiry against him, as well as an increase in the Mahapola scholarship allowance.
When the protest march attempted to proceed beyond Peradeniya rest house, the police resorted to tear gas to disperse the demonstration.(Shane Seneviratne)

Uni students cannot dictate about private Universities. They are need and we must have them. If the students wants to change the progressive decisions of the government, they can now or after completing studies contest and enter Parliament

These students should be only given loans which they should repay to the country. Bad enough we are paying for their education they have absolutely no interest in serving the people. That only want to get more money for themselves without contributing anything in return!!! More private universities have to be created so that these ungrateful students learn that they too should work and study to repay the debt to society!
