Police Inspector arrested inside hotel for accepting Rs. 1 Mn bribe

Colombo, June 23 (Daily Mirror) -A Police Inspector was arrested by officials from the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) while accepting a bribe of Rs. 1 million at a hotel in Kalutara North.

The suspect has been identified as a Police Inspector attached to the Kalutara Special Crimes Investigation Bureau (SCIB), operating under the Kalutara South Police Station.

According to the police, the arrest followed a complaint filed by a citizen regarding a vehicle investigation currently being conducted by the Kalutara SCIB. The suspect had allegedly demanded a total bribe of Rs. 1.1 million from the complainant, promising to release the vehicle and report the matter to the court in a routine manner without filing criminal charges.

Investigating officers revealed that the suspect had previously accepted an initial installment of Rs. 100,000 on May 30. He was caught red-handed by a team of Bribery Commission officials last night while accepting the remaining balance of Rs. 1 million inside the hotel premises as agreed.

The arrested Police Inspector is scheduled to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court for further legal proceedings.
