Negotiations are underway to reduce the study period by one year so that children can graduate one year earlier, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said.

He said exams should be conducted on time and results should be given on time which will lead to their graduation one year earlier.

The Prime Minister expressed these views while attending the prize-giving ceremony of Visakha Vidyalaya recently.

"After leaving college, we enter the university, which is the center of access to universal knowledge, to join the knowledge of the world and add special values of education to a country. That is the difference between a college and a university.

"As students, you have had a tough time. Recently, the country faced a very difficult time. Currently we are recovering from that crisis. With the strong commitment to expand the fields of imparting knowledge, new fields have emerged. Any individual can join the different fields and serve the country.

"All of us, including parents and students wish for exams to be conducted, results to be received and open doors for higher education on time. The government is committed to implement this schedule with determination. It is essential," he said.

First of all reform stone age system of UGC and education system in the country. We produce more arts graduates and they are not qualified even to teach in schools ( some of them) some of them are appointed as university lecturers with the support of some academics ( they take some favour from students to give class for some less able graduates) all this destroy the integrity of our education system ) Sri Lanka was once famous for its high quality of education) now one by one good quality in education is going down and go and see some poor quality of lessons in arts and humanities in Sri Lankan universities.. university staff know well how to milk the government but the government does not know how to make them work.. It is good for speed up our education in school and university but there must be some vigorous system to monitor the progress of education in schools and universities.introduce old system of inspection in school and university to assess the quality of education. Fire all

Britain created the school education ,universities, and railways etc in Sri Lanka because they never thought that one day they would have to leave Sri Lanka. Nevertheless, focusing on life in Britain, surprisingly education is not given the prestige as it is given in Sri Lanka. Only about 10% of the royal family members went to university , only about 60% of the British MPs have university education , and almost none of the Britain’s top businessmen ever went to university.

Where are the jobs for those graduates other than in medicine and engineering

    Dee Sunday, 17 September 2023 12:54 PM

What are you doing about those who can’t graduate from state university for more than 8 years?

    Andare Sunday, 17 September 2023 01:11 PM

Can a mattaya decide on an important issue like this? We can reduce the school study period further by having a Scholarship Exam at Grade Five and successful students to enter the University !

    Gee Sunday, 17 September 2023 01:54 PM

So people here will be even dumber than they already are

    Ama Sunday, 17 September 2023 01:58 PM

So the knowledge gained at present also will be reduced proportionally ? Instead why don't you give University admissions quickly. Also tell Under graduates NOT to create problems at Universities etc.

Good move, many students travel 2 to 3 km daily to reach school, they get exhausted and long hours in school, add more stress, this will help to reduce traffic congestion as well.

First of all reform the current education system. Half the subjects you learn are worthless and obsolete. Our current education system does not make individuals for the appropriate work force. Have English, Math and Science compulsory. Introduce selective subjects once you come to year 9 like, trade courses, engineering, electrical. plumbing, carpentry and computer science. Scrap all other subjects.

Uneducated lots taking decision for the educated. Nonsense of SL.

    Nimal Sunday, 17 September 2023 04:52 PM

Does he want to create a set of muts?

    Ram Sunday, 17 September 2023 05:24 PM

In the 1960s it was 4 subjects for ALs. Now it is 3. School study to be reduced by a year. All this may be good for the politicians but not for the students. Students will lack one year of study.

    Nuwan Sunday, 17 September 2023 05:28 PM

Education reform has to be done carefully. Piecemeal changes are only going to make matters worse. One of the biggest challenges the state has it to build trust among the population.

He has exceeded his retirement age and now talking nonsense in girls schools.

wickrama wijayasiri Sunday, 17 September 2023 06:04 PM

Sam, Universities are not trade schools to train students aiming at jobs. This is the biggest misconception in our system. For job training, it should be trade schools. However, there is still a stigma attached to attending trade schools. Majority of the parents want their children to attend a University. General arts and science faculties are meant for students who intend to further their studies into other special areas. In SL case they are for 'failures'. People have to change their thinking and attituded.

A Medical studies need snow3 years instead of 4 years there will be more doctors in Sri Lanka

Our politicians come up with ideas for their survival best if every one decide

    Cherath Sunday, 17 September 2023 07:19 PM

Most important is a systematic change for parity between prestigious schools in the big cities and the village schools. The education budget needs to be at least 6% of GDP and fair proportion of that ought to be for providing educational facilities given to top schools like labs and equipment for ordinary schools. Alongside, English teachers need to created , trained extensively to work in ALL SCHOOLS. Since 1956, the provincial and village schools are destined to lick the leftovers and irrespective of talent children therein languish at the bottom of this society, with no salvation in the horizon.

    Zaza Sunday, 17 September 2023 07:48 PM

Politicians cannot decide what is good and bad education for us. First, let us have a National Policy on Education. Tinkering with the Educational System has killed the nation's progress. Let us have the services of experts in the field of Education to decide what is good and bad for us.

    Terrence K Sunday, 17 September 2023 08:09 PM

By reducing the number of years could cause those who attain a degree getting frustrated as our job market is saturated and this will breed an Aragalaya which will have many repercussions since some of these disciplines are producing graduates who do not fill the slots of the Private Sector. The available jobs in the government sector is at its brim and overflowing since most of these jobs are not based on qualifications and experience but the support given to the ruling Party. We need a rethink on this matter and this should be in line with the present availability of employment and employment to be generated in the future for different fields.

Gong Baas Sunday, 17 September 2023 08:54 PM

Already the standard of education in Sri Lanka including those turned out from our Universities are sub- standard. Imagine what the state would be if the school study period is reduced from the current period ! This man may have made the remark without any forethought just to make it sensational and get cheap publicity.

    Sambo Monday, 18 September 2023 08:37 AM

Why don't you close all the schools and say study from home.

    KD Monday, 18 September 2023 08:42 AM

A 13-year school education is not standard worldwide. It should be 10 years or 12 years. After O Levels, kids who do not want university degrees should do vocational training like in Germany. Pure trade skills. Otherwise 12 Years: In many countries, such as the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, students typically complete 12 years of compulsory education. Most countries kids graduate high school at 17 or 18. University by 21 or 22. Here it 25 or 26.

Prof. Leslie Fernando Monday, 18 September 2023 11:34 AM

Foolish idea Dinesh. Are you crazy? Don't try to tarnish the education system.

june macapagal Monday, 18 September 2023 04:28 PM

It is high time that this guy should retire and go home and rest rather than muttering nonsense in schools.
