Then why not get them and family members to declare their assets and make compelsory to declare it to parliament committee when receiving large amounts of funds from a sale of property or other means.

"A daily allowance of Rs. 2,500 for attending Parliament sessions" - We elected them to attend the parliament, why a special payment in addition to the salary? We don't get additional payments when we attend our offices as employees>.

Ravi K will use his two police to evade arrest Wednesday, 20 November 2024 07:31 AM
Now that Ravi K as an MP will have to police to protect him, he becomes untouchable. He can drive unregistered, car built illegally from imported car parts, and no one will challenge him, since he has police to protect him.

The monthly salary of 54,000 is not practical. It is better to increase it up to 250,000. A vehicle and a limited petrol allowance should be given. These things should be practical. Stopping corruption and waste is the key to saving money.

I think it’s very good idea. That mean they won’t depend on small favors of others. At the moment , life in Colombo and suburbs is very expensive. This given amount Rs 54000.00 is not enough for even per a week. When they are paid well, bribes and corruption jump over the window. In bottom lines they are selected from the voters and they are law makers. Take Singapore as a example.

GERIATRIC TAX PAYER LAST 50 YEARS Wednesday, 20 November 2024 07:15 PM
Yes! If it is a Good idea THINK THIS WAY TOO... Increase the Individual Income Tax Threshold from the present Rs.100,000 per Month TO Rs.500,000 per MONTH. Then it is very fair...

What is the middle level Senior Manager's rate in the commercial sector. That is what it should be, and omit daily attendance allowance unless it is meant and to be used for daily subsistence away from home.

Don't joke those who do not want to serve for the perks resign Friday, 22 November 2024 06:58 AM
Those MPs who find financial hardship can resign, and go back to working like before they were MPs. There will be plenty enough people who will appreciate to serve the country. What is practical is making politics harder for crook MPs like in current Opposition and former governments.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will have to seriously rethink about the LOW Salary of LKR 54,000. I am very shocked to see this figure. What can they do with this LOW Salary? Shame on him. Has he ever heard about the word "COST OF LIVING"

225 x 54,000 x 12 months = 145,800,000 LKR. Apart from the main ministers and any deputies - what do the rest do???? Do they contribute constructively.. A small country with so many in parliament. Good tax payers money wasted... what do all of them do... stationery and stamps ??? ... when will this country every modernise and change. They are NOT the ones doing all the hard work. It is the common man and legitimate businessmen/women keeping this country afloat...

Being an MP is not employment but coming forward for service. A reasonable Rs.54000 is enough but what is horrendous is the pension after just five years. A teledrama actress who contributed nothing at age 28 receives pension for life, may be another 50 years. An employee needs to work 20 years by which time he/she will be near 50.

Office peon post get better benefits. Just imagine when that salary also returned back to party funds. Probably in future no one will want to become an MP since its purely a service job.

It's important to recognize that providing a decent salary and essential allowances to parliamentarians is necessary to ensure they can perform their duties effectively. Here are the allowances MPs are entitled to, according to the Parliament website: Rs. 2500 for attending parliament sessions Rs. 2500 for attending committee meetings on non-parliament days Rs. 100,000 for maintaining an office Rs. 54,285 Member Allowance Rs. 3,500 per day for a driver Fuel Allowance – 284 liters for Western Province, 356 liters for outstation Rs. 50,000 for mobile bills Rs. 10,000 for personal staff travel expenses Rs. 350,000 for stamps annually These allowances are designed to cover the costs associated with their roles and responsibilities. While these benefits are not new, ensuring transparency and accountability in their use is crucial to prevent any misuse. If MPs adhere to ethical practices and avoid malpractices, these allowances can support their work without raising concerns about unnecess

These figures were always available in websites including in Wikipedia. And all previous parliamentarians we call rogues (though we voted for them as well in past) also only got these same salaries. Even the president only get 97,500. iIt's nice to see university professors, teachers and doctors who cripples the nation with trade union strikes asking for wage hikes now coming to parliament to earn very much less! A senior professor earns about 350,000 plus research allowances. Were we the voters fooled a bit?

What for the telling???? Rs 2500 in the pocket, one could have ‘Kiri They’, from Hambantota, Diyawanna and Back, also entertain you 1/2 dozen way too on his (MP’s) allowance! Every, 3rd, 4th Tea, don't be squib, share an “Adiyak” with your elector!!?? What don't know what is “Adiyak”!!?? Then you're not Sri Lankan origin!!?? If you are only used to 'Pol or Thal Ra', easily done, Pol Katta under respective tree, so passers-by cannot see it happening SL style!!?? If any policemen object, do it in TRUE Sri Lankan Style – ‘RECRUIT THEM TO YOUR FOLD’ then it would be MUM'S the "operative word"!!?? This, FIRST EXERCISE that would identify whether you are suitable for the position

Salary should be around Rs. . 150,000/-. That way MPs won't indulge in other work to earn more money.

Hopefully practical and affordable benefits will be provided to MPs. No point in masking from the public the real benefits. Because all the MPs will have to travel and attend not only the parliament sessions, but other meetings and engagements. Don't think any MP will be able to pocket out expenses for such requirements on their own.

Salary(allowance) should be increased especially if it is a full time job and family depends on the income. Should not have money worries, will be difficult to do the job properly otherwise, some can refuse the payment if they wish.

Why stationary allowance? now no one using stationaries. Probably they are cashing it out. If required, that can be reduced to Rs 5,000/- per month.

THE GOVT IS NOT GOING TO DECIDE ON ANYTHING WE SAY, AS MANY OF US HAVE DIFFERENT VIEWS, LET US GO WITH WHAT IS SAID, WHO KNOWS IF THE ALLOWANCES ARE INSUFFICIENT THE GOVT WILL INCREASE IT. Wednesday, 20 November 2024 02:16 PM
WHAT!! 100,000 FOR STAMPS/STATIONARY, WHO THE HELL IN GOVT WOULD POST A LETTER TO ANYONE WITH THE TECH AVAILABLE NOW AND PHONE CALLS!!. STATIONARY YES, AS THEY HAVE TO OFFICIALLY COMMUNICATE TO SOME EXTENT ON PAPER. THE ABOVE ARTICLE INDICATES PERKS AND ALLOWANCES, BE PATIENT TILL WE GET THE FULL PICTURE.

Without the duty free car permits? Then again, only the duty is free and NOT the price if the vehicle . In SL, vehicle prices are so high compared with developed countries. Where is the money coming from to buy the car? Wait for the honeymoon period to be over. It is too good to be true!

Don’t worry too much about all those low salaries and these will go up as and when needed . Let them show that they can work for public even with this sacrifice.. a lot of authority measures needed . All those salaries will go up but don’t panic yet 54000 is not enough./ we all know that but wait for sometime ..

This will definitely put the corrupted politicians to rethink whether to involve in politics. Very good move by NPP,MPs need to work for people and not for themselves. MPs could be paid in relation to their current earnings but not exponentially more than average wages. NPP's move paves the way for only service oriented politicians to involve in politics.

54,000 is not logically unacceptable.we still want MPs to acquire fund funds illegally due to this low wage.Be realistic we don’t want wealth disparity between MPs and others .I think it should at least be 600,000 to 750,000 per month.

Rs 100, 000/- sounds too high. For communications e-mails should be used mostly, and most organizations and individuals do have smart phones and email accounts these days. E mail plus a supplementary allowance to complement e-mail should do. The government mus provide a common server system and ISP for all MPs as part of governments infrastructure support.

Actually a MPs salary will come to 328,000 rupees per month after all allowances are added.what im waiting to see is a statement from all JVP / NPP MPs that they will not take any of that .Afterall they promised during presidential and parlimentary campaign trails that they will work for free if elected. They say they would make politics a Service not a salary taking employment.it was just 3 months ago

The first thing is to reduce the members of parliment. For a country of our size, 120 should be more than enough. This national list should be for professional people only and not for people who contest elections. The number should reduce to around 10 or 15. All in the total should not be more than 120. Then give them a reasonable salary as per the COL. Pension should be after seving 20 years or above and eligible to get it after 60 .

Think of it this way, people: This role is like a Salesperson's role. Base salary, then incentives (which have not been disclosed) on top of that. Everyone commenting here needs to realise that we are all being fooled by this salary/perks scheme. Wake up everyone - this is the new Sri Lanka.
