Colombo, July 16 (Daily Mirror)- A SriLankan air passenger was arrested this morning (16) by customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) after attempting to smuggle a stock of "Kush" drugs valued at over Rs. 31.17 million into the country.

The 48-year-old suspect, a vegetable vendor from the Mattakkuliya area, had tried to pass through the airport's Red Channel when he was intercepted by alert customs officers.

According to officials, the suspect had brought in the drugs concealed in the packaging of umbrellas. He had reportedly purchased 50 tri-fold umbrellas from Thailand, removed 20 of them from their original packaging, and used the empty space to stash approximately 3.117 kilograms of the potent cannabis variant known as "Kush."

To mislead authorities, the suspect had traveled on a convoluted route flying first from Bangkok, Thailand to Mumbai, India, before arriving at the Katunayake Airport aboard IndiGo flight 6E-1185 at around 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

The consignment was reportedly intended to be distributed among businessmen operating along "Raktha Mawatha," a known hub for trade linked to the Katunayake Airport.

Upon opening the suspicious packages, customs officers reported a strong and unmistakable odor of narcotics that quickly spread across the inspection area, prompting immediate security alerts.

The arrested individual and the seized drug stock have been handed over to the Narcotics Bureau of the Katunayake Airport Police for further investigations. Authorities are continuing to probe the broader network involved in this smuggling attempt.
