Passenger arrested at BIA with Rs. 285,000 cigarettes

A Sri Lankan passenger attempting to smuggle a consignment of foreign-made cigarettes valued at Rs. 285,000 through the Green Channel at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) was arrested by airport Customs officers this morning.

The suspect is a 58-year-old businessman from Divulapitiya. He had arrived at the Airport from Dubai at 12.50 a.m. on Fitz Air flight 8D-822.

During inspections, Customs officers seized 95 cartons containing 19,000 cigarettes that were being carried without declaration.

BIA Customs have launched further investigations into the incident.
