Parliament renovations to be done by police, army

Colombo, May 23 (Daily Mirror) - The Parliamentary Staff Advisory Committee has approved the ongoing renovation works of the Parliament building to be carried out with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Army and the Sri Lanka Police.

The Parliament Media Unit said priority renovation activities such as repairing the leaks in the roof of the Parliament building, rectifying the operating mechanism of the main copper door, expanding sanitary facilities, upgrading the Parliamentary Medical Center, and installing a Fire Detection System are to be carried out with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Army and the Sri Lanka Police.

The Daily Mirror reported this week that the Parliament building has been officially identified as requiring significant maintenance and structural upgrades with a total estimated cost of Rs. 5 billion solely for roof repairs.

Change the constitution and downsize the political system! Also, Demolish the Parliament building and sell the land to a private developer since it’s situated in a prime area. That kind of money spent to renovate a mostly under utilised building is not making sense at the current Bankrupt situation. MPs can use Zoom or similar technology to participate from their offices or homes. Only ministers need to be present at an official building and conduct their debates accordingly. Similar activities were taken during Covid in most countries. Need to think “outside of the box” in the current economic climate as there are more pressing issues such as medical, transportation, housing etc for the general public well being.
