PTA will be repealed, new legislation will be introduced instead: Justice Minister

The Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) will be repealed and a new legislation will be introduced in place of it, Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara told Parliament today.

He said a Cabinet paper to change the relevant laws will be submitted within the coming days.

A PTA is required for the security of SL. Please understand and have mislead yourself in your haste. The new PTA will be in conformity with this type of legislation in every country in the world. Current PTA has too many clauses which allows the state to virtually apply it to any citizen to cause hardship for even an imaginary offence just to incarcerate him.

Harshana Nanayakkara Minister of Justice and National Integration has massive tasks ahead to reform and renew. Advancing ‘Justice’ and ‘National Integration’ is an absolutely necessity. Each measure that enhances ‘Justice’: the rule of law, independence of the judiciary, access to justice, penal reform, court system. The abolition of the PTA and replacing it will something less draconian, must be part of reform of legal education, the role of lawyers and provision of legal aid. NPP deserves full support.
