PM pledges safe, tech-driven digital education for Sri Lankan children

Colombo, Jan. 30 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka will move towards a carefully regulated digital education system that protects children while maximising the benefits of modern technology, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said, outlining plans to ensure that digital devices received under foreign aid are used efficiently, safely, and equitably across the school system.

Addressing a discussion on education digitalisation held at the Ministry of Education in Isurupaya on January 27, the Prime Minister emphasised that human resource planning is essential to make effective use of advanced digital equipment introduced to schools. She said children will be guided into digital learning through a child protection–based framework that regulates the use of digital devices according to students’ age groups and grade levels.

Dr. Amarasuriya said a formal mechanism will be established to distribute digital devices obtained through foreign assistance in a balanced and transparent manner, ensuring that all schools benefit fairly. She added that teachers have already been equipped with the necessary skills to handle modern digital tools through systematic training programmes.

The Prime Minister made these remarks during discussions with representatives of Huawei and the UNESCO International Research and Training Center on Rural Education (UNESCO-INRULED), following a briefing by the Centre’s Executive Director, Professor Zhao Shouyi, on priority areas for advancing digital education in Sri Lanka.

Professor Zhao said China’s readiness to support Sri Lanka’s education digitalisation drive by providing interactive screens and other smart classroom technologies, particularly to enhance learning in rural schools. He also said specialised training programmes on modern digital teaching methods would be conducted for teachers through UNESCO-INRULED, in line with the Ministry of Education’s reform agenda. Professor Zhao commended the Prime Minister’s leadership and commitment to driving education reforms through digital transformation.

The Prime Minister expressed appreciation for the continued support extended by the Chinese government to Sri Lanka’s education sector through national digitalisation projects linked to this initiative.

The discussion was attended by Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Madura Seneviratne, senior officials from UNESCO-INRULED and Huawei Technologies, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the UNESCO Sri Lanka National Office, and officials from the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Education.
