PM discusses issues of university non-academic staff

Colombo, September 13 (Daily Mirror) - A discussion was held at the Prime Minister’s Office under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya to address several issues faced by university non-academic employees.

During the meeting, trade union representatives raised concerns regarding the reduction in salary rates, the MCA allowance, the 20% allowance, and the method of calculating overtime payments.

They highlighted that the gradual reduction in the salary rate—from 20% to 11%, and currently from 11% to 6.94%—in line with the existing salary increase, was a pressing issue that required immediate resolution.

Union representatives further pointed out that while non-academic salaries were once adjusted in line with government employees, the gap had gradually narrowed over the years. They also stressed that despite holding talks with political authorities and the Department of Management Services, no satisfactory solutions had yet been reached regarding the MCA allowance, 20% allowance, and overtime calculations.

The shortage of non-academic staff and the delay in new recruitments were also raised. It was noted that while the matter of new appointments had been resolved, further study would be conducted on the remaining issues, with permanent solutions to be taken after discussions with the Vice-Chancellors of all universities.
