PHIs warn of rat fever risk during New Year festivities

Colombo, April 20 (Daily Mirror) - Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) have warned of an increased risk of rat fever during New Year festival activities, particularly traditional folk games held near water sources and paddy fields.

They noted that many New Year events are organised in close proximity to small reservoirs and agricultural lands, creating conditions that could heighten exposure to the disease.

The public has been advised to remain vigilant for symptoms such as fever and muscle pain. Individuals experiencing such symptoms are strongly urged to seek immediate treatment at a government hospital.

Authorities have also requested those engaging in water-related activities during the festive season to obtain preventive treatment for rat fever in advance.
