More than 7,000 Government Sector and Semi-Government Sector Servants who had submitted nominations to contest at the Local Government Election are in a quandary due to the uncertainty over the LG polls, SJB MP Rajitha Senaratne said in Parliament today.

He said around 7,100 Government Sector and Semi-Government Servants have submitted nominations to contest the election and they are on no-pay leave.
"These people are on on-pay leave and provide them with some redress,' he said.

Government MP S.B. Dissanayake, who admitted the matter, said similar situations have occurred in the past and added that they had been permitted to report for duty after Cabinet Approval was obtained.

"Cabinet can decide this matter as well. They should be permitted to report for duty," he said. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

Come on! Do we have people contesting a local elections who needs the govt pay for a month? No wonder they all start robbing after they get elected. The government should ban anyone who does not have proper means of a stable income or fixed assets from contesting elections. Otherwise all beach boys, 3 wheeler types, druggies get elected and they start robbing!

Ranil is responsible and he will have to compensate them out of his pocket.

At least, 25,000/= per head, should be paid for those 7000 Govt. service contestants.
