Over 600 HIV cases in nine months



Colombo, Dec. 16 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka faces a worrying upswing in HIV/AIDS cases, with over 600 new infections and 13 deaths reported in the first nine months of 2025.

According to the National STD/AIDS Control Programme, Sri Lanka has logged 639 HIV/AIDS cases from January to September in 2025 (January to March).

This represents a 6% increase compared to the corresponding period in 2024, which reported 605 cases.

Of the cases, 68 males and three females fall within the age range of 15-24, while the remaining cases are individuals above 25 years old.

The male-to-female ratio of reported HIV cases in 2025 stands at 6:1.

Further, a total of 30 HIV/AIDS related deaths were reported during the said period. The first quarter (January-March) marked the highest number of cases reported in the year a single quarter since 2009.
