Over 150 water supply systems hit by islandwide adverse weather: NWSDB

The adverse weather conditions affecting the island have severely disrupted water supply operations across multiple districts, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) said.

According to the Board, 343 water supply schemes operate islandwide, of which 156 systems were affected due to flooding, landslides, road blockages, power outages, and damage to pipelines and machinery. This disruption has caused significant inconvenience to thousands of consumers who depend on these services.

As of the morning of December 02, 2025, approximately 126 water supply systems have been restored, while around 30 systems remain non-operational. NWSDB employees, retired staff members, community volunteers, and personnel from the tri-forces are working around the clock to complete restoration efforts.

Officials warn that full restoration may take several more days due to the extent of the damage, especially in areas where access roads remain blocked or where intake points are still submerged.

The NWSDB further confirmed that all water supply systems in the Western Province are currently running at maximum capacity. However, over half of the systems in the Kandy, Puttalam, and Kurunegala districts remain out of service. In several other districts, systems are operational but functioning below maximum capacity.

Consumers are strongly advised to use water sparingly until the situation stabilizes and full service is restored.
