One hour power cuts in four zones from 5.30 p.m to 9.30 p.m commenced from yesterday (11), the Power and Energy Ministry said.

CEB Additional Secretary and media spokesman Sugath Dharmakeerthi said the power and energy Ministry and the CEB had taken a joint decision not to have powercuts.

However, the privately-owned 172 MW Sojitz Kelanitissa Power Station experienced a breakdown last evening.

If the Power Station is able to urgently repair the breakdown, there will be no need for power cuts, the Ministry said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

What is meant when they say that a decision has been taken not to impose power cuts and also announce that power cuts will take place with retrospective effect? Are they mimicking our ministers who say one thing and do exactly the opposite? I strongly believe that the examples set by the ministers should be emulated by state officials as well.

As for these power outages, what is their excuse this time? Covid/pandemic? This happened in the past also? It is only for a very short time? Weather conditions? Global economic crisis? Inflation? A curse? Majority of us knows, it is neither. This is due to the utter lack of financial management by the people in power. This is just a result of pure greed. Whoever mismanaged and robbed us by opting for loans with high interest rates, commissions to facilitate these loans and any other can offer to get our county from this crisis. What are the chances of that? Who will come forward?
