Colombo, Jan. 19 (Daily Mirror) - The Meteorology Department says no significant rainfall is expected across the country until the end of March, according to current weather forecasts.

Department Deputy Director Athula Karunanayake, told the media that the northeast monsoon, which is presently influencing Sri Lanka’s weather, is likely to conclude by the end of February. He added that the inter-monsoon period will follow and continue through March and April.

However, he said that a brief spell of increased rainfall is expected from January 23 to 26.

“During this period, cloudy skies and occasional showers can be expected in the Eastern, Uva and North Central Provinces, as well as in the Matale and Hambantota districts,” Karunanayake said.

He warned that some areas may experience fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 millimetres during these few days.

Apart from this temporary weather change, he explained that dry and sunny conditions are likely to prevail in most parts of the country in the coming weeks.

Karunanayake highlighted that relevant authorities, including the Departments of Agriculture and Irrigation, should take timely measures to minimise possible adverse impacts on crops due to the anticipated reduction in rainfall.

He further said that cold weather conditions can be expected in several areas as winds are currently blowing from the Indian mainland. Chilly morning winds are likely to be experienced in many parts of the country.

Karunanayake also cautioned that the cooling of water vapour in the atmosphere could result in morning fog in some provinces, while frost conditions may occur, particularly in the Nuwara Eliya district.

Therefore, the Meteorological Department urged the public and relevant institutions to remain attentive to weather advisories in the coming weeks.
