No increase in MPs’ insurance: Dy. Speaker

The insurance of parliamentarians has not been increased as reported by the media, Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapaksa said today.

Responding to an allegation by Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa, the Deputy Speaker told Parliament that there has not been even a discussion on the matter.

MP Weerawansa said Parliamentarians were increasing their insurance by two to three folds whereas the season tickets of schoolchildren were being cut down. “This is wrong,” he said.

The Deputy Speaker said insurance of the MPs have not been increased and that there had been no discussions on the matter as yet.

“It is only a media report,” he added. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)
