No compensation received by flood victims yet, Claims Namal

Colombo, December 18 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser and MP Namal Rajapaksa, has alleged that despite assurances from the government, no compensation has so far been received by people affected by recent adverse weather conditions.

Addressing the media, Rajapaksa said officials at the district and divisional levels—including Government Agents, Divisional Secretariats, and Grama Niladharis in affected areas—have not been formally informed in writing about compensation procedures. He claimed that while the President had made certain statements in Parliament regarding compensation, a different narrative had been presented to District Development Committees.

“We see the political authority focusing on ceremonial events to issue death certificates. This is not the time for ceremonies. What people need are land deeds and permanent solutions,” Rajapaksa said. He added that although the current government came to power opposing celebrations, there appears to be no issue with holding functions to distribute deeds to people relocated to safer areas.

Rajapaksa urged the government to take a more practical approach and engage directly with affected communities. “Even now, there is no proper mechanism for people to voice their concerns. They only share their problems when we visit them,” he said.

He further claimed that the government has failed to adequately support those severely impacted by the adverse weather. According to Rajapaksa, many displaced families remain uncertain about when they can return to their homes from temporary shelters.

He also criticized the lack of ground-level assessments by the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO), stating that officials have not visited several villages where evacuation warnings were issued. “Schools have reopened, but children are unable to return home as families remain displaced,” he added.

Rajapaksa called on authorities to act urgently to address the concerns of affected communities and ensure timely relief and resettlement measures.
