Parliament, May 08 (Daily Mirror)- No airline in the world is making any profits and it is a situation inherent to all airlines, Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said today.
He told Parliament that airlines even in rich countries such as Air India, BOAC and Swiss Airlines were not profit making and some were sold out.
Responding to a question by SJB MP Hesha Vithanage, the Minister said Air India was sold out to Tata due to losses and added that Emirates was provided some USD 2 to 3 billion by the government every year.
He said a small country like Sri Lanka is not in a position to maintain an airline in that manner.
"We have no funds to purchase aircraft. We cannot invest a large capital. We take flights on lease. We need to join with a group which can bring in a large capital so as to continue the airline to ensure the job security of 6,000 employees," he said.
MP Vithanage said that 791 employees were recruited to SriLankan Airlines in 2023 which is the largest recruitment during the last 10 years while it was incurring a loss of Rs. 609 billion by the end of 2023.
The Minister said recruitment was made as some 474 employees had resigned last year.

Too many terms these kinds of morons have been in power and you can see and feel the results. Why suffer under their hands and they live the luxurious lifestyle with all the perks paid by the taxes and loans collected. Time to revamp the parliament with young professionals even if they are in opposition. Voters, don’t vote anyone above 60 years old as they won’t bother to look far ahead for the country and the people’s development. Most above 60 will find ways to accumulate wealth as it’s time to retire.

The statements made by Minister Siripala de Silva about the profits of airlines around the world are of course nonsense! When a minister makes such statements, one must be able to expect that he or she will first inform himself or herself of the facts!!! For example, the German airline Lufthansa Group had a turnover of 35.4 billion euros and an operating profit of 2.7 billion euros in 2023!!! From my observations of politics in Sri Lanka, such "deliberate inaccuracies", false figures and poor research seem to be common practice for those in government to deceive the people!!! This will not get us out of the many self-inflicted miseries of politics and certainly will not win people over to a move towards a better future!!!

Airlines are making profits in the world . Not all but quite a few . Ofcourse the margins are paper thin . About 5 years ago net profit of the entire aviation sector per passenger (total industry profit divided by total passengers flown ) was about 4.50 dollars Acc to IATA less than the price of a Big Mac and a coffee . This takes into account profit making and loss making airlines of the world . Here minister has been misled by some “ expert “ in or outside the airline / aviation sector Need to capitalize YES big time and that’s not something our govt can do with tax payers money .
