New pension scheme for fisheries community launches today

Colombo, November 22 (Daily Mirror) - The new pension scheme introduced under the 2026 Budget for the fisheries community officially comes into effect today.

The launch ceremony will be held at the Lotus Tower, Colombo under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.

According to Agricultural & Agrarian Insurance Board Chairman Pemasiri Jasingarachchi, fishermen will begin receiving pension benefits once they reach the age of 60. The programme has been introduced under the government’s “Pohosath Ratak – Lassana Jeewithayak” policy to ensure the social protection of fishing families.

Officials further stated that, in the event of the beneficiary’s death, the spouse will continue to receive the insurance benefits. Fishermen may contribute to the new pension scheme based on their level of income.

Pensions are for government servants. Government cannot utilise tax money to pay non government pensions. This government has gone mad.

What kind of world are you living.? Of course any employee, private or public can contribute to the government pension plan and receive benefits. Government managed pension funds are usually invested in bonds and high-yielding low risk investment instruments.

If they are to receive a pension then they must contribute on a monthly basis. Why our country cannot develop is so much money is spent on giving Aswesuma and Samurdhi for people who even can Efford. These people have houses, some have three wheelers, TVs and even refrigerators but yet claim these benefits. It seems these are being given to gain votes. But has to be looked into.

This is the very good scheme like in foreign countries; it should expand to all employees of the private and in the agriculture sectors. Government pension system should be abolished. Everyone in Srilanka should be given social security number. from the age of 18 wherever they work their employer and self-employees also should make mandatory contribution for their Srilanaka Pension Plan. (SPP). This spp should manage by pension department under the supervision of finance ministry
