Never demanded 6% budgetary allocation of GDP for education in one year: Prime Minister

Colombo, Nov. 25 (Daily Mirror) - Claiming that they never demanded a budget allocation of 6 per cent of the GDP for education in one year, Education Minister and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya said today that 2.04 percent of the GDP has been allocated for education this year.

The Prime Minister told Parliament that Rs. 704 billion was allocated for education in the 2026 budget after many years.

She said they had never demanded that 6 per cent of the GDP must be allocated for education within one year and pointed out that allocation for education must be increased gradually while strengthening the institutions and making necessary reforms.

The Prime Minister said it is pointless allocating funds alone without making necessary reforms and strengthening the institutions.

Exactly. People expecting the sun and moon and crying havoc in only one year. Institutional transformation takes progress, time, success and failure. What matters is how earnest policy makers are, and this government is the most earnest we’ve had thus far. But that doesn’t mean voters should worship them either.

This government cannot be earnest with their words and press coverage while doing the same tender manipulations as the previous govts. Eg. Giving short notice for the double cab tender. As lecturers and professors some of them can talk very well. Education reforms has always been happening for decades. Study the names of the exams our grand parents to parents had and one era even technical subjects like woodworking, metal work and poultry farming were taught in schools. So where is the visionary education reforms other than what the education department experts are anyway developing? DId Madam Harini ever say on a stage that she will be happy with 2% annual allocation for education or spoke of a 6% allocation and made the voters believe she was referring to an annual allocation? Misleading, lie machines.
