Colombo, Dec. 3 (Daily Mirror) - In the aftermath of severe weather, the Sri Lanka Navy has launched a comprehensive, island-wide Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) programme to deliver essential services to affected communities.
As part of these efforts, the Navy has deployed specialized diving teams to conduct urgent underwater repairs at key water treatment facilities, including the Gatambe water treatment plant in Peradeniya and the Mahiyanganaya water treatment plant.
Responding to requests from the Uva and Central Provincial Water Supply Boards, the Navy dispatched two skilled diving teams, each comprising five personnel, to address critical damage. At both facilities, vital water pumps were submerged, inoperative, and clogged with silt and debris due to elevated water levels.
Navy divers successfully carried out underwater operations at the Mahiyanganaya plant yesterday, clearing obstructions, performing maintenance, and restoring pump functionality. Similar underwater repair operations at the Gatambe plant are currently underway.
