Namal accuses government of undermining workers’ rights

Colombo, April 30 (Daily Mirror) - Former MP Namal Rajapaksa has accused the government of treating workers unfairly and undermining trade union rights, while claiming it has failed to protect the interests of the working community.

Speaking at a media briefing held at Nelum Mawatha today, Namal said the current administration, which he noted had come to power with the support of the trade union movement, had “trampled on trade union issues” and failed to uphold workers’ rights.

“The government has transformed into a place where workers are beaten and chased away when they seek intervention in trade union matters,” he said.

He further alleged that the present administration has not acted in the best interest of workers, contrasting its current stance with its position while in opposition.

Namal also announced a series of events planned to mark International Labour Day. He said floral tributes will be paid tomorrow at 8.00 a.m. in front of the T.B. Ilangaratne statue, in recognition of his contribution to the labour movement.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and several party members are expected to participate in the commemoration, he added.

He further said that religious programmes will be held across all constituencies in the country to invoke blessings for workers. A separate religious observance is also planned at the Kelaniya Temple in the evening, with the participation of both himself and the former President.

Namal also pointed out that this year Labour Day falls on a Poya day, stating that in a Buddhist country, priority should be given to religious observances during such occasions.
