Motorcycles lead vehicle registrations in 2025, DMT reports

Colombo, Dec. 9 (Daily Mirror) - Motorcycles have emerged as the most registered vehicles in Sri Lanka so far this year, the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) said.

According to Commissioner General Kamal Amarasinghe, a total of 223,423 motorcycles have been registered with the DMT since January 2025. Other vehicle registrations include 55,338 cars, 13,850 three-wheelers, and 35,268 electric vehicles across all categories.

Amarasinghe said that the surge in vehicle registrations has helped the department surpass its annual revenue target. While the DMT was assigned a target of Rs. 16 billion, it has already collected Rs. 17.8 billion as of November 30.

Looking ahead, the Treasury has set a revenue goal of Rs. 18 billion for 2026, a target Amarasinghe said the DMT is confident it can achieve.
