Missing woman in Gampola reportedly murdered: Police

The 22-year-old woman who had gone missing for six days has been killed, according to the confession of a suspect arrested in connection with the incident.

Police who examined the CCTV recordings in the area arrested and questioned a suspect who had followed the young woman on her way to board a bus to her place of work in Gelioya.

Under interrogation, he confessed that he had forced the woman to go with him to the jungle and when she refused, he took her by force to the nearby coconut estate, strangled her to death and buried the body.

During investigations, police recovered the parts of her umbrella, her pair of slippers and the bottle of water from the scene.

Police who guarded the scene pending further investigations said that steps would be taken to submit a report to the court and exhume the body.

The young woman, Fathima Moonavuvara (22) who was allegedly killed was an employee of a pharmacy in Gelioya and a resident of Elpitiiya in the Gampola police area.

She had gone missing since last Sunday (07) after she left home for employment. (Suranga Rajanayaka)

This is terrible. The judiciary has to move swiftly to prosecute and impose the death penalty and not take years. It is incumbent on the President to sign the impending death sentences and follow the rule of law and the constitution of the country. Otherwise these incidents will only become more prevalent. There has to be a strong response and demonstrable punishment after conviction.
