The 22-year-old woman who had gone missing for six days has been killed, according to the confession of a suspect arrested in connection with the incident.
Police who examined the CCTV recordings in the area arrested and questioned a suspect who had followed the young woman on her way to board a bus to her place of work in Gelioya.
Under interrogation, he confessed that he had forced the woman to go with him to the jungle and when she refused, he took her by force to the nearby coconut estate, strangled her to death and buried the body.
During investigations, police recovered the parts of her umbrella, her pair of slippers and the bottle of water from the scene.
Police who guarded the scene pending further investigations said that steps would be taken to submit a report to the court and exhume the body.
The young woman, Fathima Moonavuvara (22) who was allegedly killed was an employee of a pharmacy in Gelioya and a resident of Elpitiiya in the Gampola police area.
