Minister’s response over 12 hour daily working shift

Labour Minister Manusha Nanayakkara denied some trade union allegations that the government is planning to introduce a four day working week and to increase the current daily working shift to 12 hours from eight hours.

"The remarks made by trade unions are misleading. We have started public consultations, after that we have to draft a proposal," the minister told the Daily Mirror.

Earlier the Joint Secretary of the Free Trade Zone Workers' Joint Trade Union, Anton Marcus alleged that the government is planning to introduce a four day working week with three day weekend holidays and introduce a 12 hour daily working shift instead of the eight hour shift which is the current practice.

"Workers will lose the privileges which they are enjoying now with the new move. All workers should get together in preventing this change," he said. (Yohan Perera)

For certain roles within some industries a 12 hour shift will be welcome by both it's employees and employers. Why should the unions have a problem with that? Just look at competitor countries.

12 hours a day will 48 hours whereas at present 8 hours a day is only 40 hours. Will the employer pay for the additional 8 hours. In many employments the work assigned can be completed in 5-6 hours but employees finish only 4 hours of work during the 8 hour shift.

Government sectors need to change they get payed for years pay... actually work only approx 7months sat.sun off holiday pay sick leave poya and the other holidays come to play then you prob have 5 months off something need to be done to get people working and contributing the government sector and the nation how can a government pay somuch no work pay. ....food for thought

This will kill the OT hours. These unions are the downfall of this country! This useless government can’t control the unions. A government which can make all unions null and void is what we need! Instead our foolish people wants to make the ‘mother of all unions’ victorious!

it is a good idea but don't make in schools ; university and colleges ..many university lecturers and schools teachers are not working even within this 7 hours and yet if make 4 days for them ...they will end up in three days.and they would not do their jobs ...This should be done only in some departments and private sectors with some strict rules and regulations.

Will the new arrangement increase productivity? Has the minister made any scientific study of the result? The fact is, after 8 hours, productivity comes down for heavy manual work. If you are thinking of overtime, then it is another matter! What about the effect on family life due to long hours and absence of one parent in a child's life?
