Met Dept warns of thundershowers and severe lightning in several areas

Colombo, Nov. 12 (Daily Mirror) - The Meteorology Department has warned that thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur in the Southern and Uva Provinces, as well as in the Kalutara, Rathnapura, and Ampara districts.

The Department further cautioned that temporary localized strong winds may also occur during thundershowers, urging the public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages and risks associated with lightning activity.

Residents are advised to seek shelter indoors and avoid staying under trees or in open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations, or near open water bodies during thunderstorms. The public is also urged to refrain from using wired telephones, connected electrical appliances, or open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors, and boats during stormy conditions.

Authorities have also warned the public to remain alert for fallen trees and power lines and to contact local disaster management units in case of emergencies.
