Man acquitted of robbery charges after 20 years

The Court of Appeal last Friday (07) set aside a judgement of the Panadura High Court and acquitted a man from robbery charges over an incident that had taken place in 2002, due to insufficient evidence to sustain the conviction.

The incident of robbery had taken place on November 24, 2002 in Ratmalana.

The accused and one other had been arrested by the then OIC of the Anti-Corruption Unit of the Mount Lavinia Police station.

Having considered the evidence of the complainant that the accused was shown to her at the police station prior to him being produced for the identification parade, the Court of Appeal decided that the prosecution has failed to prove the charges against the accused beyond reasonable doubt.

Senior Counsel Darshana Kuruppu and Sajini Elvitagala appeared for the accused. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)

If this small case took 20 long years, just imagine how many decades will be required to prove politicians exposed (if at all) under the Anti Corruption Act.

This is how our judiciary operate? It means our judges are incompetent and they don't know how to improve the quality of our legal system and our court and prison system ? They are out of touch with modern day legal department? Send all those senior judges home and get some good young judges into judiciary to make some changes..
