Mahanayake Thera requests President to reschedule Vesak Day for May 30

Colombo, Dec. 29 (Daily Mirror) - Mahanayake Theras of the four Chapters have requested the government to revise the date of Vesak in 2026 because there will be two full-moon days in May.

According to the lunar calendar, Vesak is celebrated on the Full-moon day of May to mark the birth, enlightenment and Maha Parinibbana of the Buddha.

Mahanayaka of the Malwatta Chapter Most Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera, Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter, Most Ven. Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thera, Mahanayake of the Amarapura Nikaya Ven. Karagoda Uyangoda Maithree Murthi Thera and Mahanayake of the Ramanna Maha Nikaya Ven. Makulewe Wimalabhidana Thera have made this request in a memorandum addressed to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

They have requested to change the Vesak Day to May 30.

They have pointed out that that the birth, attainment of Buddhahood and the Passing away of the Buddha had taken place at one auspicious hour, and it is customary to hold the Vesak festival on a Full Moon Poya Day that dawns at the same auspicious hour according to astrology.

Mahanayake Thera have informed the President that after consulting the veterans in astrology they decided that the Full Moon Poya Day on May 30 should be the Vesak festival day this year.

They have requested the President to instruct of relevant authorities to fix the date of the Vesak festival for May 30, 2026.
