Colombo, April 26 (Daily Mirror) - The Mahanayaka Theros of Sri Lanka’s three main Nikayas—Siyam, Amarapura and Ramanna—have issued a joint statement strongly condemning what they described as anti-Sasana and illegal acts carried out by individuals posing as Buddhist monks and misusing saffron robes to transport narcotics.
In their statement, the Chief Prelates expressed grave concern that such actions have tarnished the historic role and reputation of the Buddhist clergy both locally and internationally. They stressed that those involved had abused the deep respect accorded to monks in Sri Lankan society, as well as the sacred significance of the saffron robe.
The Mahanayaka Theros called for all individuals identified as “monk impersonators” involved in these illegal act, to be duly punished under the law. They also highlighted the urgent need for a proper legal and institutional mechanism to investigate such incidents and facilitate the expulsion of those found guilty from the monastic order.
The statement further noted that the respective Nikayas would conduct their own inquiries into such cases and take necessary steps to remove offenders from the order following due process.
In addition, the Chief Prelates urged law enforcement authorities to carry out swift investigations into drug networks allegedly targeting and recruiting young monks for illegal activities, and to take strict legal action against all those responsible.
They also emphasized the responsibility of senior Buddhist teachers to closely supervise novice monks and take appropriate action if any are found engaging in activities that undermine the Sasana.
