Colombo, Sept. 11 (Daily Mirror) - Dramas are being staged for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to win public sympathy, Minister of Industries Sunil Handunetti said today.

“The SLPP and Rajapaksas are trying to win sympathy by telling them that they have nowhere to go after they had to vacate their official residence, the Minister said.

“The country has been put on the right track after enacting the President’s Entitlement Repeal Bill. We have kept our promise by getting this legislation approved,” he told Parliament.

Stopping benefits for former presidents will only deliver limited financial gains. Globally, it is standard practice for countries to provide certain facilities to former heads of state out of respect for the office they once held. What truly matters is for the government to prioritise major development projects that generate sustainable growth and meaningful income. The returns from such initiatives would far exceed these small cutbacks. At present, however, the government appears to be focused on micro issues rather than pursuing the large-scale projects the country urgently needs. By paying too much attention to minor reductions, they risk losing sight of the broader vision required to transform the economy. This also reflects a lack of properly exercising the executive powers vested in the government to drive real economic progress.

Apparently this house was renovated with over 47 million SL RS, during the time Sri Lankan people went through toughest time in their life. They got an extension in this house so that their children can live there.. ( how can you justify that) This house was legally meant for MR and his wife but , in this house all those "Astronauts", and other sons were living there too. These money was tax payers money ,, people should set aside their political differences, and look at this impartially.. this is people's money.. they looted tax payers money ( as per media) not only that they used tax payers money for their luxury. There's no question of 'trying to get sympathy'. MR will always be loved by his people unlike your President and you people, who are already hated by most people whether you do a good job or not.
