Leader of Opposition Mahinda Rajapaksa was making contradicting statements on Counter-Terrorism Bill (CTB), Minister of Public Enterprise Lakshman Kiriella alleged today.

Minister Kiriella said in a statement that Mr Rajapaksa agreed for a dialogue with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to discuss the Bill.

He charged that Mr Rajapaksa had changed his tune now and had said that he would not allow the Government to pass the new legislation.

“Sri Lanka brought in the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) in 1979. This was based on the legislation introduced in the UK to combat terrorists of Northern Ireland.

“The UK updated this legislation 2000 and in 2001 to face global terrorism,” Mr Kiriella said.

Kiriella said that several other countries had introduced legislation to face global terrorism.

He alleged that the Leader of Opposition was trying to mislead the people by trying to show that PTA was sufficient to handle global terrorism.
