MPs cannot walk into state institution without prior notice: Keheliya

While referring to the visit of a Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) group led by MP Kavinda Jayawardene to the National Medical Regulatory Authority (NMRA), Minister of Health Keheliya Rambukwella said no MP can walk into any state institution without prior notice.

“Speaker Mahinda Yapa informed me that no MP can walk into any state institution without prior notice. I talked to the Speaker after MP Jayawardene and the group walked into the NMRA office and he told me the procedure is that an MP should give prior notice before visiting any state institution,” the Minister told the Daily Mirror.

The Minister said he telephoned Dr. Jayawardene and said he is willing to have a dialogue with the Opposition MPs to brief them on the issues pertaining to the health sector.

“I  was at a meeting with the NMRA CEO and the chairman when the MP and the group arrived. I told him that we will meet them after the meeting but they did not come,” the Minister said.

Dr. Jayawardene said he received a phone call from the Minister when he and a few other members of the SJB went to meet the officials of the National Medical Regulatory Authority (NMRA) in Colombo.

“We went to meet the officials of the NMRA and inquire from them on the continuous usage of inferior quality drugs, but senior officials of the institution were not present at that moment. However Minister Rambukwella called us over the phone and assured that he is willing to meet Opposition MPs to discuss the current situation with regard to the health sector,” Dr. Jayawardene said.

However, the MP said his party is not interested in talking to the Minister over the issue. “The Minister should have offered a discussion before we went to the NMRA, but he was too late,” the MP said. (Yohan Perera)
