Locally made school shoes to come with one-year warranty

Colombo, November 18 (Daily Mirror) - The Ministry of Industrial Development will supply shoes with a one-year warranty, ensuring quality under the supervision of the Sri Lanka Textiles and Garments Institute, as part of a new school voucher program.

The initiative, jointly launched by the Ministries of Education and Industrial Development, aims to provide schools with fewer than 250 students, estate schools with 251–500 students, special needs schools, and Pirivena lay and monastic schools with access to locally produced footwear.

Prime Minister and Minister of Education Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, and Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Sunil Handunnetti, discussed the program’s rollout at the Parliamentary Committee Hall. Students will have the opportunity to select shoes that fit correctly, as manufacturers will sell directly to the schools.

Schools in the Western and Southern provinces have been selected for the pilot phase, with the program expected to expand to other provinces following a feasibility study.

The meeting was attended by Ministry of Education Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa, Ministry of Industries Secretary Thilaka Jayasundara, and other officials.
