Colombo, Sept. 19 (Daily Mirror) - The recently resumed construction of the Kadawatha–Mirigama section of the Central Expressway can be completed more effectively with the active involvement of local engineers, Sri Lanka Construction Association (SLCA) President Susantha Liyanarachchi told the Daily Mirror.
He noted that 18 kilometres of the section will be built on stilts, with a 13–14 km stretch passing through marshy terrain. “Since the expressway is being built near marshy areas with vertical concrete stilts, it is vital that local engineers play a key role. They have a thorough understanding of the country’s rainy weather, terrain, soil conditions, and marshland features,” Liyanarachchi said.
He recalled that concrete supports used in the project previously collapsed in Bagalegoda in 2021, underscoring the importance of quality assurance.
While acknowledging that the project has been awarded to a Chinese company under an agreement, Liyanarachchi stressed the need for close scrutiny of the company’s construction standards and technology.
The project, estimated to cost USD 950 million, has already incurred a USD 5 million compensation payment to the Chinese contractor due to delays.
Despite these challenges, Liyanarachchi commended the resumption of work, noting that the expressway is expected to be opened to the public in 2028.
