Colombo, Nov 19 (Daily Mirror) - A 24-year-old Kiwi woman travelling solo across South East Asia says she was left “on edge” after a man in Sri Lanka sexually harassed her and lewdly exposed himself while trailing her tuk-tuk.
Molly, originally from Christchurch, said she was pleased with the swift action of local police, who arrested the man for indecent exposure. However, she expressed surprise that some people attempted to blame her for the incident.
The young traveller, who documents her adventures on a solo travel Instagram account, shared her reflections with followers, emphasizing that one incident should not define a country or solo female travel.
“I never expected that video to explode the way it did… but if it starts real conversations about women’s safety, solo travel, and the reality we still face, then it’s worth it,” she wrote.
Molly also urged people not to let one individual’s behaviour shape perceptions of Sri Lanka, which she described as “an incredible place” where she felt safe throughout her month-long journey. She stressed that women should be able to travel anywhere without fear and without having to justify their presence.
She thanked her supporters and the Sri Lankan Tourism Police for their prompt action, adding, “Let’s keep the conversation going, but let’s also remember: the world is full of good people.”
