Dr Sabesan SithamparanathanUK, Dec 31 (BBC) - A Sri Lankan-origin pioneer of location-tracking technology has been appointed OBE in the King's New Year Honours.

Dr Sabesan Sithamparanathan, who founded Cambridge company PervasID, devised a real-time location tracking system used by NHS trusts, hospitals, aircraft manufacturers and retailers.

He is among 105 people in the East honoured for their exceptional contribution to their communities.

He said he was "absolutely over the moon, thrilled" to receive the award.

Dr Sithamparanathan is recognised for services to innovation technology and the promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (Stem) subjects in education.

He said it was "a great honour and testament to the hard work and innovation of the entire team".

In hospitals, his system uses electromagnetic fields to track surgical instruments, ensuring they are decontaminated and sterilised properly, and available in the right place at the right time.

Retailers have also adopted the technology to track stock and enhance click-and-collect services.

Originally from Sri Lanka, Dr Sithamparanathan studied at the University of Sheffield before embarking on a PhD at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he developed his tracking system. He was elected a research fellow at Girton College in 2011.

"I came here as a teenager to pursue higher education," he said.

"If it was not for Cambridge and the people who mentored me along the way, I would not be where I am today.

"Cambridge allowed me to exploit possibilities; to maximise potential. I learned from very talented professionals.

"At the end of the day, innovating is exciting but bringing an idea from the lab to the real world has been a real challenge.

"On a personal level, it is a dream come true."

Dr Sabesan Sithamparanathan

Sri Lanka only produces doctors and engineers ,if you want to become a scientist or a mathematician then you have to leave Sri Lanka and go to some advanced countries to study. Then the brainpower of the individual is utilised for the advancement of that country and not Sri Lanka. This is how European and North American countries remain powerful.

forward thinkers can't work in a country where backward thinkers thrive. accept the reality

Sri lanka we have a very good education system,we have also very intellegence children from my experience I can tell we need a good political system including intelligence political leaders. educated level not in thugs level. we can count our politician who got degrees how many of them. some politician they dont know Geography well.

Dr. Sabesan DOREE, you're turning dreams into reality—nice! Very proud of you and kudos on the shiny new badge. Could you consider lending a helping hand to Sri Lankan children in the STEM field?

His success came after leaving Sri Lanka. Once again this should be a real eye opener. SL education system needs a major overhaul starting from backward minded employees and ministers. Without trying to reinvent the wheel, model the system from Europe and USA where it is tried and true.

    Mandayan Monday, 01 January 2024 11:28 PM

Hi Locca, there is a saying in our villages, he, himself wouldn’t eat and wouldn’t allow others to eat. That’s exactly what I think of our politicians to take racism for their benefit at the peril of this great nation. If Sinhalese doing well then at least racism is good but look at where the nation stands. The minorities doing well abroad and the majorities are busy in Aragalaya searching for a better life and a leader. So may be two state solution may be better for both! Either equality and do well together or go in separate way, agree?

This great talent if lived in SL would perhaps never been allowed to enter the Faculty of Engineering for the mere 'sin of being born as a Tamil'. However, going to UK in his teens opened up a path that allowed him to be a torch-bearer for a useful innovation. SL's short sighted policies brought by politicians from majority group is the reason why the country will continue for years to come in this economic quagmire.

    Mandayan Monday, 01 January 2024 05:15 AM

Sri Lankans are every where in the UK. Tomorrow New Year’s Day mark the beginning of Tamil Heritage Month recognised by the Greater London Authority, Government of Canada, Provincial Government of Ontario, State of Washington etc. Thai Pongal gets the wishes from British, Canadian and Australian Prime Ministers who thanks for the contributions in health, businesses and education. Brain drain is a great lost to Sri Lanka!

Thiru Satkunam Monday, 01 January 2024 05:57 AM

Good news to open a new year, and congrats to you Sir on this great achievement. Peace and Goodwill is the need of the hour, not war mongering causing colossal damages both to humans and ecology, and sadness angering nature, with retribution in the future!

    lion Monday, 01 January 2024 06:01 AM

Congratulation for your great achievement .

    Parththuran Monday, 01 January 2024 10:53 AM

Congratulation Dr.Sabesan.. He was one of the topper (remembered he was 3rd rank) in Mathematics stream in 2003 A/L from Jaffna District. As he is my batchmate I probably knows, later, he might be got a chance to enroll at a UK's University by scholarship despite enrolling at Universities in Sri Lanka. Well talented, he deserves it and proud of him.

Thank you DM for publishing this! Again migration gave this opportunity. If he is in Srilanka , simply, he would have been unnoticed and ignored by main media’s and political system as he is a Tamil in origin.

    Kathirgaman Monday, 01 January 2024 06:31 PM

There are happy exceptions. I met a young guy today who is highly qualified in IT. Having specialized in Artificial Intelligence and landing a top job in USA, he has returned to Srilanka to serve his motherland and is currently heading an IT related faculty in a University close to Colombo. By the way, heartiest congratulations Dr. Sithamparanarhan on your singular achievement.
