Kananathan eyes gains for Sri Lankan businesses in Kenya as Kenya–China zero-tariff trade takes off
March 24 - Nairobi: Former diplomat Ambassador Kananathan was among distinguished international and regional dignitaries who witnessed a historic trade milestone yesterday, as Kenya officially flagged off its first consignment of exports to China under a newly established zero-duty access framework.
The consignment was flagged off jointly by high-level leadership, Han Zheng, Vice President of the People’s Republic of China, and His Excellency Kithure Kindiki, Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya. The event marked the dispatch of Kenyan goods to China under a zero tariff.
China’s decision to grant duty-free access to Kenyan exports is widely seen as a transformative step in deepening bilateral trade ties. The initiative is expected to open new avenues for Kenyan producers, enhance competitiveness, and stimulate economic growth by expanding access to one of the world’s largest consumer markets.
Deputy President of Kenya, two countries have developed strong trade, investment and people-to-people ties that have resisted influence from the ever-changing geopolitics of the last six decades.
China has helped Kenya to build a crucial railway network, and Chinese involvement in road, manufacturing, water and energy infrastructure has its footprints across our land.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, former Ambassador and businessman Kananathan noted that our Sri Lankan businesses operating in Kenya stand to benefit significantly from the new arrangement. He emphasised that, especially, tea producers, tea traders, and agricultural exporters in particular could leverage the duty-free access to expand their reach into the Chinese market and enhance their global competitiveness
Ambassador Kananathan hailed the event as a symbol of Kenya’s growing global presence and economic ambition. The development signals Kenya’s readiness to position itself as a competitive player in international trade.
